GC Gstaad is just great mountain golf course which was designed by Peter Harradine in 1962. This beautiful and quite unique layout has some very nice holes and offers some spectacular views as the course lies 1400 meters above the sea. Unlike many mountain courses this one seemed very fair to me. There are some tricky and technical holes but the layout is as already mentioned very fair. Most holes are not very long so there is no need to be greedy off the tee if you are not very precise. Even though there are also a few blind and challenging holes for first time players it was pretty much clear to me where to play the tee shots which I consider as a good golf course design. First nine holes are a bit longer and more forgiving while back nine are shorter and more technical. My favorite holes: Nice opening Par-5 is short but narrow and it is followed by short but lovely uphill Par-4 where long iron off the tee is enough. 5th is wide open Par-4 with nice mountain views. 7th is another short nice Par-4 as is the 9th downhill Par-4 where you can test your driving skills and length. 10th is drivable Par-4 if you are lucky like me - 190m blind hybrid shot over the trees off the yellow tees will do the trick, unfortunately I walked off with 2 putts from 5 meters from the pin but easy birdie is always good. :) If you don't feel like going for the green a mid-iron towards the right side is okay for short approach shot to this small green. 12th is another tricky but nice par-4 where long irons or a hybrid is the right choice as the entrance to the green is well protected. 14th is short Par-4 with a blind tee shot so make sure you aim for the marker post and you should do just fine. 16th is quite a beast despite its short length so favor the left side off the tee and you will have much shorter shot to the green which is high above the landing zone,1-2 clubs more will do the trick to reach the green. 18th is nice finishing Par-5 where good tee shot is rewarded and the green is easily reachable with second shot. Par-3's are mostly short but nice. Note: Uphill Par-5 6th hole: be careful with the second shot as even slightly missed shots to the right will most likely bounce right into the bushes/lateral hazard so favour the left side of the fairway. This is one of the few downsides of this layout. The course was very well maintained with excellent fairways and bunkers. Greens were nice but unfortunately quite slow due to some problems early in the season. Very nice practice facilities with great downhill driving range. Staff was very friendly. Pro-shop is well stocked and food in the restaurant was also tasty. If you are not in very good physical condition golf cart or electric trolley is recommended. Golfclub Gstaad is located about 15 minutes from Gstaad and it is for sure a must play if you are in the area.
