Leonard review

Zala springs fits the definition of an hidden gem. Located about 2.5 hours from Budapest, Vienna and Zagreb on the south side of the Ballaton lake it is a real treasure. Opened exactly 3 years ago they managed to put a high quality golf resort in the middle of a country where golf is still quite rare. The project including the possibility to buy a second home is still expanding but you hardly notice it. A geothermal lake will be added and a spa and many different real estate options. The clubhouse is very modern but cozy and the course is excellent. It's a 'typical' Trent Jones (jr.) design with huge bunkers, long holes and risk & reward shots. For the short hitters I really recommend to move a tee forward because you will enjoy the course more. There are several driveable par 4's like hole 4 (288m. from yellow and wind in the back 3 out 3 times I played it) hole 6 is driveable but tricky with a stream crossing the fairway a wedge before the green. The par 3's are not very long but they are compensated by the 3 500m+ par 5's but if you play them sensible they are do-able. On the way to the 10th be sure to go around on the right side of the driving range. Hole 10 is a tricky par 4, play it as a par 5 you have better chance for a good score. 11 is s beautiful par 5 with 7 bunkers in the landing zone of your drive on the right side. Hole 12 is the longest par 3 157 meter all over water. It's a nice hole but I would suggest the tee box between the blue and red tees. It's bit shorter but I prefer that angle to the green in stead of the 2nd teebox. 17 is an other great risk and reward hole you can cut it of and go for the green but you have to be accurate miss left. 18 is an excellent finishing hole 504m uphill par 5 with plenty of bunkers and a long 'beach' bunker beside the green to prevent you rolling into the water. The staff is very friendly everything it's possible. We stayed in the studios and they are off a great price quality level. I'm really curious to come back again when the extra facilities are finished. Although it's not super close to the airport they have a shuttle service and it's really worth the ride.
