Doing an evaluation report about the Costa Navarino Bay Course is not an easy thing having played it only once in May 2019. Numbers and facts are only one view on the Course, the less important one. But challenge, excitement and fun when playing, are the much larger moments. The impact of many moments of scenic and distant view is such a big one that the temporary construction site will become a less important thing, too, to talk about, except the future routing and new clubhouse; here we go: The facts: The (yellow tee) Course is rated PAR 71,5232m to go. It´s challenge is clearly marked by a slope of 132. Designed by Robert Trent Jones jun. it follows the T.J. architect central theory of “a difficult par, an easy bogey. ” The routing follows the natural circumstances without exaggerated interventions. The use of a buggy is a must, not because of long fairways but due to long distances to go from one green to the next tee box from time to time. Additionally one has to surmount a height of almost plus 400m following the tracks. This might be too exhausting. While hole #9 ends far away from any supply point, the final 18 is just around the corner of the temporary clubhouse. The surrounding infrastructure in may 2019: The reception area does not meet high expectations on the first view. It is located in some combined temporary shipping container but offering everything for a short stay before starting the game. Very well trained and friendly staff take care for the golfers needs, supporting with a coffee bar, very little pro shop and (warm) snacks on demand afterwards. The proximity to the hotel – only a 10min free shuttle - made a more developed infrastructure (showers) superfluous. However, the remarkable new clubhouse will be opened early summer 2019. The today´s training area is insufficient. Just behind the bar, there is a small putting green only. It takes a much longer drive with a golf cart to get to the hill up driving range (no cover) which we haven´t used. The fun, the excitement, the challenge – the Bay Course: The beginning 2 holes guide the golfer to the beach, easy to play and good to warm up. The 3rd ends with an outlook into the Bay while doing the final putt. And fairways 4 and 5 are just parallel to the beach, the whisper of little waves in your ears. Leaving the waterfront, the walk uphill and downhill will recompense every player with breathtaking views on the Bay of Costa Navarino on every fairway and green. This part doesn´t have too long distances to cross but challenging due to ground waves and steep aprons complicating the gain insight, due to well situated bunkers along the little undulated fairways and well protecting bunkers before the greens. The Course´s face changes a lot when passing the #11 getting an impression of the rocky “inland” Mediterranean landscapes. The Bay Course is a diversified and challenging Course. The greenkeeper do a hell of a good job. Fairways, bunkers and greens meet highest standards and expectations. Indicators clearly show the way and Buggies equipped with all necessary supply including a very easy to follow navigation system support any golfer who is doing his very first round. Nothing is left to chance. We were lucky to play with little wind only. It was not too hard to hit the greens in regulation but to stay on two putts was a big challenge. Thus a hcp 12 – 18 was not that hard to keep, but the scratch player were forced to concentrate on every single stroke and there was little chance only to make up for any mistake. We really enjoyed the Course and did not feel negative impact of the construction site next to the fourth fairway or number #7! I will play the Course again for two reasons: To enjoy incredible Course and its breathtaking view on the Bay again – I could not get enough of this. And to experience the new routing which comes up with the clubhouse opening - and the new clubhouse which promises both to catapult an extraordinary Course on an even higher level.
