The Championship course of Golfclub Adamstal was built in 1998 by Canadian golfcourse architect Jeff Howes. The Golfclub is owned by Franz Wittmann Sr. and is mostly run by the family. When we played Franz's wife was the starter. Grandma Wittmann was serving at the halfway house and Franz Senior and Junior were playing in front of us (Franz Junior is a pro golfer and was preparing for a ProGolf Tour event played at Adamstal the following weekend). And we later met all of them again in the club restaurant. How cool is that? The course starts with a medium length par 4 on the flattest part of the property which eases you into the round. The second hole is then much more challenging. It's a short par 4 from a raised tee. The fairway is probably the most narrow of the course and the green is challenging to hit with a bunker and a steep fall off on the left. My favourite hole on the front 9 is the medium length par 4 5th hole, named "Zur Felsenwand". You need to hit your tee shot through some rocky formations and you have a beautiful view of a mountain right in front of you. A very pretty hole. The toughest hole is the par 5 7th hole aptly named "Green Monster". It's 526 meters from the members tees and you really need to hit 3 good shots to hit the green. A true 3 shot hole. Once you have finished the 9th hole, make sure to make a stop at the halfway house. A "Brettljausn" and drinks are included in the greenfee. And grandma Wittmann is very hospitable. Any tip that you give will go to the junior golfers of Adamstal. My favourite hole on the back 9 is also the signature hole at Adamstal. The par 4 17th hole is called "Adamthalblick" and is a dogleg right. After a good drive you have a full view of the infinity green and the surrounding mountains. Simply spectacular! Bottom line: Golfclub Adamstal is my favourite golfcourse in Austria and it deserves its ranking. The course is walkable (the pros on the Challenge Tour need to do it 4 days in a row!) but you probably enjoy it more with a buggy. Don't forget this is a true mountain golf course. I can recommend the golf and dinner option when booking a tee time. It's very good value for money and the 3 course dinner after the round was delicious!
