About half an hour drive from Barcelona city centre towards Girona you will find Llavaneras golf club which is one of the oldest golf clubs in Catalonia. Initial layout was designed by F.W. Hawtree and only had 9 holes but it was later extended by the team of Spanish designers Espinosa, Sardà and Vidaor. As it is located on a hill less than a mile from the coast it offers some nice views of the Mediterranean Sea. Although the course with its length of around 5000m and Par 70 is not long but it can still be a proper test of golf. The fairways are not wide so it requires precision. Driver is not needed on many Par-4's but it will reward you well if you do hit it on the spot. I love the layouts where you can see exactly how the shot was intended off the tee and Llavaneras is one of those courses. As the holes are not the longest, most of the greens are on the small side, however they can be quite tricky and they are all well protected with bunkers and slopes. The water comes in play on three holes - 4,11 and 13 and the 75 bunkers (if I am correct) will test your accuracy. I think the course is still very enjoyable to play for all skill levels... My favorite holes on the front nine are short opening Par-4, below the clubhouse. Par-4 4th - dogleg right and slightly uphill. Par-4 6th - another dogleg right where you hit your driver over the trees can cut the right corner to get close to the green. Par-5 7th with its double dogleg is also very good - I love holes where I can hit the driver off the deck on my second shot to got close to or on the green. I also like the well protected Par-3 8th and slight dogleg right Par-4 9th. On the back nine the stretch of holes 13 to 18 is really good. Two pretty much straight Par-4's - short and narrow 13th where downhill tee shot to the right edge of the fairway will give you better angle to the green which is protected by a small lake. 14th is slightly uphill with quite generous tee shot and large sloping green. 15th is short and slightly uphill Par-3 - lovely hole. Par-5 16th has a lot of room of the tee but reaching the green in two on this dogleg right will require two excellent shots as the green is highly elevated and well protected. If you are going for the green in three make sure you have enough club on your approach shot. And yes, the famous Par-4 17th is also my favourite hole - short and technical with nice green and beautiful view of the Mediterranean Sea. The course ends with very good Par-3, short but it will punish any misses left or right. The course was in good condition with decent greens. The clubhouse which from the parking lot does not look like much is quite large and very nice with all the amenities (and then some) and very good restaurant with beautiful terrace overlooking the sea. The food in the restaurant was very tasty so you can't go wrong if you are hungry. Pro-shop is also well stocked and all the staff was super friendly. A course well worth playing if you are in the area.
