Real Club de Golf El Prat – enjoying Barcelonas number 1 course. I was very happy to be part of a group of 5 players, mostly single figure handicapper – who explored the two main courses of El Prat, Yellow and Pink, but also allowed to play the Spanish open way took place here, a mixture of both. In 3 days there has been an overwhelming amount of information which makes it hard to evaluate such a great course in just a few words… We received a warm welcome by the Manager himself, Mr. Marcello della Vecchia who later gave us the honor to accompanied us when playing. Not only perfectly informed but personally introduced to the course and its special challenges by the former Sardinian amateur golf master we were able to play from white tees as well as from yellow ones. The training areas are vast and offer everything you need to be prepared. There is not only the hugh driving range (pointing towards sun in the morning hours) but a number of chipping, pitching and putting greens all around (!) the clubhouse and a 3 hole pitch and put course just around the corner to warm up. At no time – with a tournament showing up – we had to wait or felt cramped. I was surprised about the conditions of the putting greens, extremely fast from my point of view. As fast as we explored the courses´greens later – the way it should be. The Pro shop offered everything you need for a single round or to stay longer, including all kind of clothing. Rental clubs were available and these clubs were in a good condition. Every equipment we received additionally was fully functional, well maintained and / or in a good condition. The buggies were equipped with fresh water, score cards and pencils. Cleaning devices were missing as well as the bottle of sand and seed. There was no navigation system but the distance guide books were very good and helpful. It was also a great help to keep the buggies to go to the nearby Hotel La Mona, which is not part of the golf course. But there is a special path to drive through a creek, crossing a very old bridge first, passing and old manor to get there… this way is worth to be explored, too. You can´t go there (this unique path) by car. The clubhouse is very unique. The architect Carles Ferrater must have won a price for this structure, however you can see at many little spots that these facilities have been used frequently and got old already. But more important: The Clubhouse offers everything you need, enjoy and relax: To unload car before parking you may do a short term parking at the entrance area. From the terrace you have a great view on the driving range and returning players from the courses. The restaurant offers a very good variety of excellent food, English menu available. And the younger the waiter, the better he speaks English, too. Showers, physiotherapeutic treatment and all locker rooms are located in the basement. Additionally luggage can be stored in a certain room at ground level. Waiting areas to sit and have a talk are all around. The areas are very spacious. The hole golf area is far more than 200 hectare and as far as I understood, there are three courses in: THE PINK COURSE This course is the premium course of El Prat. Playing from yellow and white, hcp 9, it was a great challenge to get on the greens in regulation. But the changing lengths (e.g. par 5 - 524, but also "only" 488m, e.g. par 3 from 131 to 201m) allow for a successful game even for mediocre amateurs. However there are some fairways going really uphill (#10, #12). Especially # 10 is a tricky one – if you have the chance to tee off on the original yellow or white – do so! I was lucky to get on the greens quit often with stroke 2 or 3 and these chances motivated me ever and ever. The greens however were too hard for me: Very fast, hard to read! The holes´ edges perfectly cut and trimmed – any mistake cost an extra stroke. I do not want to describe the course in detail but I would like to point out, that this course is really diversified, Interesting, and sophisticated. Many fairway bunkers narrow the fairways. The greens are exposed and elevated. Regarding the greens at #10, #12 and # 13 better protected by bunkers than Normandy in 1944. Both, #9 and # 18 end close to the clubhouse. Pink course is offering some viewpoints down to the Mediterranean sea but mostly running through the pine trees and bushes, well protected, like yellow course does. YELLOW COURSE Unfortunately the yellow course was under construction partly, but the maintenance personal is doing a good job not disturbing the golfers. I preferred the IN much more than the first 9 holes but at the very end I was happy about a good result which motivated me to play it again. Again the greens are of top speed (stimpmeter 10,5 minimum). They might do not look like, but they are perfectly maintened. The bunkers´ sand was light and fine-grained, very pleasant to stand in and play out of it – if necessary. All Par 5 do have little doglegs and you have to think about your ball turn and know how and where to place your ball for the next shot. it is advisable to have an experienced player next to you. Minimum to read the distance book properly before teeing off. The yellow course is a bit more protected by the surrounding pine trees and bushes. The fairway edges are curved inwards and allow much more lucky bounces. Yellow is known as the more easy course but I have enjoyed it the same way. I am not very experienced in using buggies. The Yellow course should be explored on foot. Pink is uphill and a bit longer, a buggy is a good choice. All path for both courses are easy to follow and stay close to fairway and greens without disturbing other golfers. However the rough areas do not look maintained that much… well, keep and eye on the wonderful courses! A little disadvantage; The courses are signposted in a confusing way, using old and new style information. They will be fully renamed shortly. Cross check the "birdy books" but you shouldn´t get lost. After all, El Prat is really worth to play, you get a lot of good golf vibration for your money! Finally: La Mola is a mountain with a height of 942 meters in the Catalan municipality of Gallifa. At the top of the mountain is the Romanesque church of Sant Sadurní de Gallifa. For whatever reason, there is an holy rule on both courses; if you put into the churchs direction, the ball´s pace will slow down early – like uphill La Mola – and vice versa… believe in this rule!
