The Alwoodley Golf Club
Alwoodley Golf Club is undoubtedly one of Great Britain & Ireland’s leading lights when it comes to inland golf. Very few courses can surpass the debut work of Dr. Alister MacKenzie as a golf course architect in terms of quality, playability, strategy and ultimately as a true test of golf. As at most top courses the ground game is still very much alive and kicking at Al…

Golf At Goodwood
The much praised Members' Downs Course plays up towards the racecourse, initially through dramatic valleyed fairways before climbing even higher where the remainder of the course is mostly perched on the South Downs giving golfers incredible views over Chichester in the near distance and the Isle of Wight and sparkling Solent beyond. Although one of the oldest golf cours…

Portstewart Golf Club
The championship Strand course at Portstewart in County Londonderry is one of the finest links in all of Ireland. Portstewart sometimes gets a bad rap for having just nine good holes (the front nine) along with an inferior back-nine. Now, this is true to a certain extent but I’d like to clarify and put it into context by saying that the front nine is rivetingly magnifice…

Royal Portrush Golf Club
I don’t think I would ever accept the notion that a golf course is perfect – not even The Old Course at St. Andrews – but boy does Royal Portrush come close. Tantalisingly close. To say I was completely and utterly blown away by the sheer quality and golfing aura that surrounds what will be the 2019 Open Championship venue is a gross understatement. Writing this review a…

Bushfoot Golf Club
Little known Bushfoot golf course at Portballintrae near Bushmills in County Antrim, Northern Ireland is an interesting 9-hole layout in a picturesque location. Most of the course is played over pure linksland with humpy, bumpy terrain where you are never quite certain where your ball will finish.

Castlerock Golf Club
Castlerock…. simply rocks! I’ll admit straightaway that the Mussenden Links at Castlerock in County Londonderry is right up my street. It’s an authentic, genuine, rugged links course that does everything you would expect of it and at times much more. It’s rough around the edges but that’s the way I like it and this natural layout certainly delivers. Castlerock also has…

Royal County Down Golf Club
With regards to the championship course it certainly lives up to its billing as arguably the best golf course on British & Irish soil and one that vies for the title of being the greatest in the world. I don’t quite put it into that lofty bracket but it is unquestionably superb and rightly celebrated. The canvas at County Down is perfect for golf and it paints the most c…

Kirkistown Castle Golf Club
The present day layout of this no-nonsense, old-school, authentic links is attributed to James Braid and dates back to 1934 although The Club is much older having been formed in 1902. On my visit in late-June of 2018, after a spell of extremely hot and dry weather, the sandy course played particularly firm and fast with a beautiful burnt appearance where the fairways wer…

Felixstowe Ferry Golf Club
The Martello course at Felixstowe Ferry Golf Club is the only links course in Suffolk and one of only a handful in East Anglia. As it stands today there is still more than enough to warrant a visit to this open and exposed piece of linksland that is set hard against the sea and a pebbly beach for the final third. However, there is no denying that the holes on the inland …

Hallamshire Golf Club
Golfers outside the White Rose county may not be too familiar with this course but it's certainly one they should familiarise themselves with as soon as possible. Hallamshire is a difficult course to categorise. It's obviously not a links (although there are a few linkesque elements to be found here), it features plenty of heather but I wouldn't class it as a heathland c…

Woodsome Hall Golf Club
Some golf clubs hit you with a 'wow' factor the moment you drive through their gates. Woodsome Hall is certainly one of those. The front nine at Woodsome Hall is the pick of the two halves. Not only is it played through the most picturesque part of the course but it also serves up the best holes. One thing for sure at Woodsome is that everything is set up for a dramatic…

Scarborough South Cliff Golf Club
There are two, arguably three, distinct sections to the course which plays 6,393 yards, to a par of 72 and was founded in 1903. Holes 1-3 are played on the West side of the busy Filey Road and are positively parkland in nature. After a good trek through a residential area you then have holes 5-10 on the seaward side of the road. We return to the inland holes (did I men…

Castle Stuart Golf Links
You don’t need to think strategically to play Castle Stuart but to play Castle Stuart you need to think strategically. The above summarises this modern links perfectly and in my opinion is a sign of greatness. Castle Stuart is great. It’s a thinking man’s course for sure but the more naive golfer will still get maximum enjoyment from this wholly manufactured course, alb…

The Carnegie Club at Skibo Castle
The all-encompassing property has a celestial feel and a truly diverse fabric which blends together flawlessly to create unparalleled golfing terrain. For most of us a visit will provide a glimpse into another world, certainly away from the course. The term ‘millionaire’s golf’ will never be more prevalent than at Skibo. The golf course itself can be easily split into t…

Golspie Golf Club
Golspie may not be love at first sight but it is likely to be an everlasting relationship. James Braid has once again come up with the goods at this fun, and at times quirky, hybrid links course. From the moment you play into the first green until the time you walk off the exceptional ninth you are in golfing heaven. It’s a stretch of golf that will truly delight. At tim…

Wick is a traditional out-and-back links with the first eight holes taking you straight out towards the farthest end of the links before you tackle the delightful ninth which is played at right angles to all the other holes. And then the march for home begins from a lovely elevated drive at the 10th and this is where the best of the golf can then be found. The inward str…

Reay is a golf course that I had not been able to find much information out about so hopefully if you have stumbled across this review you are perhaps in the same boat as me and I can therefore shed some light on the course. f anyone dare claim there is a better 36 holes of links golf at one golf club in England than at Saunton I'm pretty sure I could make an unquestionable case for this wonderful piece of linksland. Royal North Devon Golf Club
Royal North Devon, or Westward Ho! as it is often fondly referred to, is a very special place. Perhaps it should be called Royal North Heaven! That much is obvious from the moment you drive into the car park and are informed, by an unmissable sign on the side of the historic clubhouse, that you have just arrived at England's oldest course. However, many of those who pla…

Located at more than 500-feet above sea level, close to Stroud, golfers are greeted with that same motley common-land turf, iron-age fortifications, a big sense of spaciousness and lots of interesting ground undulations in proximity to the greens. The openness of this rustic property is wonderful and I really love golf courses where this is the case. There is little chan…

I've been raving about the golf course at Hollinwell to anybody who would listen for the last 20 years since I first played here. Back then Notts appeared little known outside the Midlands save for those who were in the know. That day I played for the first time I knew I had stumbled upon something extra special. In more recent years Notts Golf Club has deservedly gaine…

The first thing to state is that Trump International Golf Links is undoubtedly an exceptionally good golf course. The second thing to say from the off is that it’s categorically not the “World's Greatest Golf Course” as the owner makes out and their website brashly proclaims. The 7,428 yard, par-72 links at Balmedie was designed by Dr. Martin Hawtree and is laid out in t…

Piltdown, founded in 1904, is a quaint heathland golf course tucked away in a sleepy corner of leafy Sussex. Absent from virtually all of the rating lists Royal Wimbledon is on a par with, and indeed superior to, several of the inland venues that regularly grace the rankings.
