One of the showcase sporting events of the English summer is here. Wimbledon. The Championships is the oldest tennis tournament in the world and widely regarded as the most prestigious.

The grass Tournament has been held at the All England Club in Wimbledon, London, SW19 since 1877. This year, 2022, Wimbledon celebrates its 100th year of Centre Court. Surrounding the Centre Court are 17 other Championship grass courts and a further 20 practice courts.

Golf courses near Wimbledon

If you’re not lucky enough to make it into the stands of Centre Court or Court One, but find yourself on the famous Henman Hill / Murray Mound sipping some Pimms and eating strawberries, you will find yourself surrounded by 3 golf courses, all within 2 miles of where you sit.

Royal Wimbledon Golf Club - 1.8 miles

RWGC is the third oldest golf Club in England dating back to 1865. It has a rich history embracing both the evolution of the Club and the game of golf. “A wonderful place is this new Wimbledon course” wrote Bernard Darwin “for as soon as we are on it all signs of men, houses, omnibuses and other symptoms of a busy suburb disappear as if by magic.”

Harry Colt, a member of the Club, redesigned the course in 1924. It continues to evolve to keep pace with the game and today provides a tough test over tight fairways with gorse and heather thrown in for good measure.

Wimbledon Park Golf Club - 1.1 miles

Wimbledon Park Golf Club is an 18-hole parkland course set around the Wimbledon Park Lake, in the heart of SW19. Narrow, tree-lined fairways demand accuracy and careful course management from tee to green. With 65 newly designed and rebuilt bunkers, golfers are forced to play a strategic round. Perfectly manicured, undulating greens will test your putting ability; whilst long par 4s and par 3s demand precise iron play.

Wimbledon Common Golf Club - 1.6 miles

Just 8 miles from Central London in SW19, WCGC is a challenging woodland course with award-winning greens on the beautiful Wimbledon Common. The course on the Common is the second oldest continuing golf course in England and Wales. It was first played on in 1865. So it is not surprising the greens are so good - they have had plenty of time to mature!

Check the website of Wimbledon for travel tips and how to get there. There is a dedicated Championships bus service from Wimbledon station going to and from the Grounds during the event (single fare £3.50, return fare £5.00). Return buses leave from outside Gate 11 on Somerset Road (exit the Grounds through Gates 12 or 13). Have fun!
