"A picture is worth a thousand words." Because we couldn't agree more with that saying, we've created a list of European golf courses with the best surroundings and views. How many of these courses have you taken a mental picture of?

To create this list there were some requirements:

  • Clubs need to be in Europe
  • Clubs need to have at least 50 reviews (for relevance)
  • Clubs in this list are limited to maximum 2 per country (for variety)

Without further ado, here is the list. Between brackets is the rating that reviewers have given that specific golf course for "surroundings".

European Golf Courses with the Best Surroundings

10. Royal Golf Club du Château d'Ardenne 🇧🇪 (9.16)

The result of the long and rich history of this prestigious park certainly makes Royal Golf Club du Château d'Ardenne one of the most beautiful golf courses in Belgium. Centuries-old trees, some of them representing very rare varieties, line the fairways that run through the naturally undulating landscape that offers superb views of the surrounding countryside.

9. Troia Golf 🇵🇹 (9.17)

At the crossroads of the Sado Estuary and Serra da Arrábida, the Troia Golf Championship Course is an 18-hole, par 72 course, 6.317 metres alongside the beach with a magnificent sea view.

8. GC Millstätter See 🇦🇹 (9.25)

Equipped with 18 holes at a length of 5,879 m from white, the golf course at Millstätter See requires more precision and accuracy than length. Good tactics and some golf know-how are the secrets to a successful round on this course. 

7. Club de Golf Alcanada 🇪🇸 (9.28)

Designed by renowned architect Robert Trent Jones Jr, Club de Golf Alcanada’s stunning 18-hole course opened in 2003. Situated in the northern part of the Mediterranean island of Mallorca, Alcanada is located right by the sea and the 6,499-metre layout blends naturally into the typical Majorcan landscape.

6. Noordwijkse Golfclub 🇳🇱 (9.30)

The Noordwijkse Golfclub is one of the best courses in the Netherlands and also ranks high in Continental Europe. The combination of its layout near the North Sea shore, which gives it its links character, the remarkable views and archictecture makes this course very challenging.

5. Golf d'Ilbarritz 🇫🇷 (9.35)

Golf d'Ilbarritz was built on the former estate of the mysterious and very wealthy Baron Albert de l’Espée, you can see the remains of his magnificent castle all along the course. It’s a unique concept in Europe, and is well known for its spectacular views and its impressive technical standards.

4. Koninklijke Haagsche G&CC 🇳🇱 (9.38)

The Royal Haagsche Golf & Country Club was founded in 1893, making it the oldest golf club in The Netherlands. The 18-hole course is located in the dunes at Wassenaar about 3.5 km from the sea. The golf course is a highly acclaimed links course, which can be considered one of the finest championship courses in the Netherlands. During the construction of the course, the dune landscape has been maintained, leaving a very natural environment. Each hole offers a completely different view and is always a new surprising challenge.

3. Golf d'Etretat 🇫🇷 (9.47)

The Etretat golf course is a renowned 18-hole course that is well known and recognized by everyone. Every year, the magazine Golf Européen ranks it among the very best French golf courses. The location makes it one of the 3 most remarkable marine golf courses in France. After a nice round of golf, we advise you to go for a walk on the "Perrey", by the sea, and you will discover all the magic of this bay whose beauty is constant whatever the light!

2. Golfclub ADAMSTAL Franz Wittmann 🇦🇹 (9.51)

Three ingredients make Adamstal a fabulous golf course. 1. A spectacular setting – Lower Austria’s Alpine foreland provides the ideal surrounding for impressive views and also has unmatched scenery.

2. A dedicated architect – the Canadian Jeff Howes, a disciple of Jack Nicklaus, who gave Adamstal its unique design.

3. A driving force behind the project – Franz Wittmann Austrians 12 times Rally champion, who transferred his ambitions into the golf sport, envisioned and realized the 27 holes. His perfectionism and idealism made Golf club Adamstal to one of the most spectacular courses in Europe.

1. Howth Golf Club 🇮🇪 (9.78)

Situated in one of the most idyllic and unique settings amidst the Hill of Howth, Howth Golf Club offers spectacular views over Dublin Bay, South towards Wicklow and North over the islands of Ireland’s Eye and Lambay as far as the Cooley and Mourne Mountains. The golf course is just 40 minutes away from Dublin city centre by car. Howth is a true Heathland Course.
