Founded as Ascot Golf Club in 1887 by local Barrister F.J. Patton, less than a year later, the golf club was given “Royal” status by Queen Victoria as many of her children learned to play golf there.
Fast forward to 2000, the golf club was forced to look for new premises as the Racecourse Authority announced major redevelopment plans. The club moved to its new home on Winkfield Road, Berkshire, on the site of former Ascot Farm. The clubhouse opened just before Christmas 2004, while still playing on what remained of the old Heath course.
The challenging 6294-yard new parkland course then opened in August 2005. Located on 150 acres of wooded Crown land, the course was described by one former Ryder Cup player as “one of the best new English courses I have played for a long time.”
Berkshire is also known for many other top-quality courses on its famous sandbelt land. The Berkshire (Red and Blue) are perhaps two of the most sought-after courses. The Red course is known for its even split of 6 par 3s, 4s & 5s, whereas the Blue course is slightly shorter but equally as picturesque heathland course.
Just a short trip down the road and you will find yourself at one of the most exclusive clubs in the country, Swinley Forest. Designed by Harry Colt, its layout carves its way through spectacular heathland vistas framed by heather, pine woods, azaleas and rhododendrons. Swinley Forest plays deceptively long and its undulating greens deliver a true test of skill to all comers.
If you’re looking to continue your challenge of playing top courses, then Bearwood Lakes needs to be on your list too. However, part of your challenge will be getting onto the course which is an exclusive club for its members and their guests. Originally within the grounds of Windsor Great Park, the course only opened in 1996 but the forest terrain and woodland has evolved over centuries creating one of the most inspiring golfing environments to be found anywhere in the world.
The course at Bearwood Lakes is maintained with exceptional craftsmanship and unparalleled attention to detail, providing world-class playing surfaces.
