Brijuni Golf Course
Acerca de Brijuni Golf Course
On Brijuni golf is played on a unique golf course dating from 1922, which then acquired the flattering title of one of the largest and naturally most beautiful golf courses of that time. But, what most attracts golfers to Brijuni is the unique setting and atmosphere of this golf course. On the reconstructed 18 holes of the onetime largest golf course in Europe, you can still experience the enchantment of playing amid untouched nature. This rightfully dubbed environmental friendly golf course is truly impressive. The golf course is maintained without any machinery, no pesticides are used, it is not even watered so that greenery of the golf course depends on weather conditions.

You can only reach this course by a ferryboat from Fazana. And this is a limit unless you are lodged on the only hotel of the place. No vehicles are admitted on the islands except bicycles and golf carts. The place is unique with a particular story (see the review of a fellow golfer - sasanemanic). I would only add that putting on sand greens is not so crazy at it might seem, and this solution must have been adopted for limited water availability. If one day the management decides for a significant qualitative upgrade - starting with irrigation - they might consider the conversion to traditional greens, this would become the best golfing place in Croatia. In any case the nowadays minimal size of the greens (sign of old times) should be also brought up to what is today expected in a modern golf course. Playing with herds of deer peacefully walking around the fairways is an unforgettable experience but watch out for their droppings.

Personally I am in love with this place (generally) and I keep coming back here at least once a year. So if you ask me, it's a must if you are in the area... BUT this golf course is DIFFERENT!
You must know what awaits you here if you want to play this course... there is no irrigation system here so the golf course is pretty much burnt down most of the time and the greens are SANDY... so no grass there either.
This was for long time Tito's (by far favorite) private residence and Brioni islands were closed to public till the early 1990's so only half of the world's presidents visited this place and some other celebrities such as Sophia Loren, Richard Burton, Elisabeth Taylor, Carlo Ponti, Gina Lollobrigida...
But... if you get lucky you will experience something you won't find anywhere else in the world... sometimes your only playing companion are dear, peafowls rabbits... At certain time of the year you might even run into some famous director or actor on your way to the golf course. I always use a bike (rental bikes only) to get around the island.
And not to mention the layout... if this golf course would be renovated with irrigation system, proper fairways and greens, I am sure it would be among top 100 golf courses in the world. And I am being modest here.
Even Jack Nicklaus himself said when he visited the property that he wouldn't change a thing here... Welcome to Brioni!
