Machynys Peninsula Golf & Country Club

Situated on the northern side of the Loughor Estuary, the Machynys Peninsula golf and country club is a tenacious newcomer to the area. With the well established Ashburnham just up the coast, this 2005 Nicklaus designed course had to be special. It certainly does not disappoint and I have had the pleasure to play here a few times in a variety of weather conditions. 

Course - If you like your water hazards and strategically placed bunkers, then you are in for a treat. Off the back tees, this is quite a formidable course, with long accurate drives a must. The rough is long here and best avoided. Holes 4 and 5 I enjoyed immensely, with multiple routes to hole, do you play aggressive hunting down that elusive birdie? Or lay up and play it safe knowing a par is on offer. The course forms two loops of nine. The first loop heads off to the east and up the estuary. You either have the wind behind or in front of you, and I found during my visits these nine holes the most affected by the wind. The back nine are to the west of the clubhouse and see you heading towards the New England style housing at Machynys Bay. Wind predominantly affecting holes from the sides. Hole 11 is absolutely superb par 3 that will test your mental steel. Surrounded by water short and left with a bunker long right you really have to be pinpoint accurate with your attack. Hole 12 follows this with a 180-yard drive over water from the back tees, not the faint-hearted. Hole 18 starts with after driving over water and finish’s with bunker defended undulating green. This course would be extremely difficult to become bored with.

Clubhouse - Located right in the heart of the development, this stunning clubhouse’s greatest asset is its veranda. With great views of the back nine holes and the Lough Estuary, this truly is a great place to unwind with a drink and food after around. If the weather isn’t permitting then the interior is a close second. With comfortable sofas, log fires, live sports and a great selection of food and drinks, you can unwind in style.

Facilities - Pro-shop, changing rooms, Driving Range, Putting/chipping areas, Spa and Restaurant with panoramic views

Staff - Efficient and friendly, our visit was well managed and well looked after. The bar staff were great and our group were kept suitably refreshed and fed.

Highlights - The Fantastic greens and for me, the par 3 11th was the stand out hole.

Lowlights - I can’t really think of one as I have thoroughly enjoyed every visit. I can only think that if one is travelling to Machynys and expecting traditional links they will be disappointed on that front.

Golf course very various with water and high rough.

The greens and the fairways were almost perfect.

There is a driving range and a good wellness area inside the clubhouse.

I found the course challenging, so I enjoyed a lot.

Deel van de holes ligt prachtig langs het water deel langs een woonwijk. Bewegwijzering en plaatje overzicht holes ontbreekt. Leuk om te spelen, mooie utzichten.

Hele fijne golfbaan maar om hiervoor nu naar Wales te gaan. Dit soort banen vind je overal. In Nederland bijvoorbeeld in Vianen. De Kroonprins van Vianen heeft veel weg van deze baan. Absoluut niets mis mee want hij speelt heerlijk. Uitdaging genoeg. Greens prima, bunkers zijn er veel van, water in overvloed. Hindernissen voldoende maar de baan speelt toch niet echt moeilijk. We hadden weinig wind dat scheelt wel.

Wat beter kan en eigenlijk ook moet is de route en hole informatie in de baan. Die is wel erg summier.
