Although he shoots nice golf pictures, he is not your ‘standard’ golf photographer. Through his popular Instagram account (almost 30,000 followers) and blog ‘Good Sundays’ he combines digital art with golf. We felt it was time for a chat with Fabian.
I’m 38 years old and I live in Munich, Germany. In 2008 I started working as a Graphic Designer and Art Director. I didn’t play golf by then yet! My golf photography career actually started only three years ago. It was after I started playing golf and within a couple of months I was totally obsessed with this wonderful sport. My love for golf was ultimately also the motivation to start combining my work with golf and golf courses. At this moment, I have worked on 40 golf courses.
I really like Portugal and Scotland. Both countries have very nice golf courses. In Scotland I remember one real special place and that is Royal Dornoch Golf Club. In Portugal I really liked the North Course of Quinta do Lago. Also Brookwater Golf Club in Australia was a very special place for me.
It’s just that you can’t really control anything. You are completely dependent of the weather. For example, I had a three-day photo production scheduled and unfortunately it was raining cats and dogs for every single moment. But it’s not always that bad. For example, when I was photographing Fortrose & Rosemarkie Golf Club there was a dolphin school that swam past me on the beach. Unfortunately I don’t have a picture of that experience!
I’m not really the fan of drone photography because it only works if the terrain around the golf course is beautiful. Nobody wants to see the industry park or the like next to the greens. My golf course photography is more like a visual golf course reportage. I want to take viewers on the course and give them a better feeling and insight about the golf course. Because I play all the golf courses that I photograph myself and write a photo article about them on my blog. This also the place where I can combine my graphic designs with golf.
There are many in this world but I would know maybe two or three who deserve the title Hidden Gem. In Scotland, there is Grantown-on-Spey Golf Club, Moray Golf Club and Golspie Golf Club. In Germany, I really like Golf Club Am Habsberg e.V. and in Australia Pacific Harbour Golf & Country Club is a real recommendation!
