When you think golf in Spain, your first thought most likely goes to the Mediterranean coastline. Catalonia, Valencia, Murcia, Andalusia and even the Balearic islands. These locations do offer some of the best golf resorts on the continent. However, there is more to explore, much more.

If you’re looking for something different than your usual trip to the Costa del wherever – something with history, culture and activity – then the capital is just for you. Throw in some sightseeing, nightlife and  excellent golf courses and you’ve got yourself a perfect trip.

There are more than 30 golf clubs in the Community of Madrid, with many of these providing two or more golf courses. We’ve whittled down this number for you by offering a list of the 6 best golf courses in Madrid. These courses are directly bookable through Leadingcourses.com. This should make planning your trip a whole lot easier (and cheaper) so you can focus on exploring the Royal Capital.

So without further ado, let us introduce our 6 best bookable golf courses in the Madrid area. As mentioned there are many more golf courses in and around Madrid. Here you can have a look at all golf courses in Madrid

6. Club de Golf La Dehesa

This course offers the golfer a diverse selection of generous fairways, with all hazards clearly visible from the tees. Each tee (3 to 4 on every hole) has been carefully designed to ensure there are no blind shots. However, Club de Golf La Dehesa’s tree lined layout will challenge your game in several ways. The undulating, challenging greens have an average area of 600 m² and are always in immaculate conditions. You can enjoy your round here without too much difficulty while being treated to stunning views of the mountains from almost every hole.

5. Nuevo Club De Golf De Madrid

Better known as Las Matas Golf,  Nuevo Club De Golf  was established in March, 1968. It is located in the municipality of Las Rozas in the Community of Madrid. The course sits on a 76-hectare estate, owned by the Romanones family. Nuevo Club De Golf boasts an 18 hole, par 70 course with a driving range. The greens are not very big and there are various water and sand hazards with the curvy fairways potentially torturing many a drive. Overall, the course delivers a very pleasant and enjoyable experience.

4. Centro Nacional de Golf (RFEG)

Sitting beautifully between Madrid and Mount El Pardo is Centro Nacional de Golf. The course has a great location just within the city limits of the capital about 10 minutes driving from the business area of Madrid City Center. The Royal Spanish Golf Federation built the track in 2005 and it has hosted the Spanish Open (2007 & 2018) and the Madrid Masters (2009). The course presents tees, tracks and greens in magnificent condition and leaves the rough with minimal care, to maintain its natural state. The skyline of both Madrid and Mount El Pardo are visible from the course. This course is highly recommended.

3. Club de Golf Retamares

Club de Golf Retamares consists of an 18-hole round with a par of 72. It lends itself to both beginners and experienced players, who will have the opportunity to use all of their clubs. The club is about 35 km north of Madrid along the A1 towards Burgos. This course is the only José María Olazabal design in Madrid and has hosted prestigious international golf Tournaments on both the PGA European Tour and Ladies European Tour. Retamares has undergone a rebuilding process over the years. Several lakes have emerged as well as many other improvements to the golf course. The club has gradually been developed into a nice and family-friendly golf club that is well worth the visit.

2. Golf Santander

Just 20 minutes away from the centre of Madrid, Golf Santander blends itself seamlessly into the rolling natural terrain. It sits in the Grupo Santander City, in Boadilla del Monte – a suburb of Madrid. U.S. architect Mr. Rees Jones designed the par 72 in collaboration with Seve Ballesteros. It provides the right balance between the skill of the player and the difficulty of the course, which is achieved by including numerous tee-off platforms (up to 8 per hole). This offers great enjoyment to both masters and beginners alike. Special feature: you will need to provide your passport number to be able to play here!

1. Real Club de Golf La Herrería

One of the 18 ‘Royal’ (Real) golf courses in Spain, Real Club de Golf La Herrería sits only 45 km from Madrid. The course is built on the grounds of the Royal Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial – Spain’s largest monastery (see photo). This location is a mountainous retreat inside La Herrería Forest, in a protected natural environment. UNESCO named the area as a World Heritage Site in 1984.

Founded in 1966, the course itself has 18 holes measuring 6,091 meters. The first 9 holes are set in the indigenous forest, beset with ash trees and holm oaks. The Abantos, San Benito y Las Machotas peaks surround the open area where the second 9 holes lie. The course is relatively flat and although a little challenging, it makes for one of the best rounds in the Iberian peninsula.

Of course, as mentioned before there is so much to do and see in the Madrid area. If you can take yourself away from the course, the magnificent capital awaits you. The city itself is famous for its many museums. If its art your into, the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía features many 20th century pieces including Picasso’s “Guernica”. The National Archaeological Museum will also provide you with all the history and culture you need. You can then visit the renowned Plaza Mayor at the end of the Gran Via, which is the centre of Old Madrid, built in 1580.

Other attractions include El Retiro Park, the Bernabeu Stadium and the Temple de Debod is absolutely recommended for a sunset. Madrid’s nightlife is second to none as well and the city’s rooftop bars are one of its coolest features. There are so many to choose from, but Azotea is probably the most central and a must for any first timer.

So whether you’re on a city break, a business trip, or a golfing getaway, you’re bound to find something to entertain you in the Spanish capital!
