Based on the criteria mentioned above, the best golf resort in Europe in 2017 is Finca Cortesin. According to us, this is well deserved. We have visited Finca Cortesin and can only agree with other golfers. From the start, they have invested in quality and service and this has paid off. The same can be said for Monte Rei Golf and Country Club, they are this year’s runner-up. Both of these golf resorts are not cheap to play or to stay in, but you will certainly get value for money. The number one of 2016, Rockliffe Hall Hotel Golf & Spa has dropped two places and is now number three on the list.

If you really care about the quality of the golf club, then you should head to Royal County Down or to Royal Dornoch Golf Club. We know both the hotels are not officially tied to the club, but as both hotels are almost located on the 1st tee we made an exception. The same goes for Old Course Hotel St Andrews.

If you only care about a good resort, then still Finca Cortesin is the place to go. Their hotel received a whopping 9,5 (based on 54 reviews).

Obviously, the list is not complete, and resorts not affiliated with Booking.com are not taken into account. Also, resorts that have not been rated enough are not taken into account. But, it’s a great starting point and all the resorts below can be booked via Leading Courses site which is very convenient!

The following golf resorts were on the 2016 list but did not make it to the list this year as they didn’t have enough reviews in 2017: Waterford Castle Hotel & Golf Resort, Golf & Country Club de Bonmont, Forest Hills, Vidago Palace, Grand Resort Bad Ragaz, Hilton Acaya Golf Resort, Domaine Cice Blossac, Superior Golf and SPA Resort, Wiredaholm Golf & Konferens and Sueno Golf Club.

We have checked many rankings concerning ‘golf resorts’, but most of them do not really point out what they are listing. We wanted to change that. So, below we have listed our criteria to be in our Best Golf Resorts in Europe rankings:

• the rating of the golf club on Leading Courses must be active, so we should have enough (recent) reviews
• the rating of the resort or hotel on Booking.com must also be active
• the (official) hotel must be located next to the golf course or must be located on the premises of the golf course.
• the golf club should explicitly mention or refer to the specific resort or hotel on its website (so linking to multiple hotels is not)

The criteria mentioned above mean that not every golf resort will be present in our Best Golf Resorts in Europe list. Resorts that are not listed on Booking.com – and thus do not have a rating which can be checked online – are not taken into account. A resort is also not listed if either its golf course or its hotel/resort has not been reviewed enough (i.e. inactive rating).

The overall rank is 50% based on the Booking.com rating concerning the resort or hotel itself and 50% based on the rating of the golf club overall (including the courses, facilities, etc.) on Leadingcourses.com. If resorts have equal scores, then the rating of the golf club determines who comes in first. We are all golfers, so that’s what we find most important.
