New golf courses opening up for play in 2023

Opening in spring 2023, Ombria Resort will offer a landmark golf experience, an 18-hole, Par 71 signature course where nature has been fully integrated into the play experience to provide a diverse challenge and setting. Ombria Resort will offer outstanding facilities and a premium branded hotel - the 5-star Viceroy at Ombria Resort - which will feature 141 rooms - 76 guestrooms and suites plus 65 one- and two-bedroom apartments, as well as 8 restaurants, heated swimming pools, Spa, Kids’ Club, Gym and much more!

The Comporta development, first introduced in 2010, was planned to feature two golf complexes: Comporta Dunes, designed by David McLay Kidd, who had been working on the project since 2007, and Comporta Links, a 36-hole facility by Tom Fazio. In April 2014, a significant portion of the Comporta Dunes course was prepared for planting grass. However, the company behind the development went bankrupt. Years later, Vanguard Properties resumed the development and the Dunes Course is expected to open during the summer of 2023.

It’s not often that a new golf course is built in the centre of a major European capital, but LaFinca Golf Los Lagos is built on the site of the former golf club Golf Somosaguas. It is located just 15 minutes from the Madrid city centre. The golf course is characterized by its variety of distances from the tee, wide fairways and greens that offer a multitude of flag positions, offering the player a wide variety of game options.

The Bois d'Arlon Golf and Resort, a project developed by Luxembourg property investor Roby Schintgen, will open in 2023 and includes an 18-hole heathland course - designed by Stuart Hallett - as well as a nine-hole parkland course by Jonathan Davison.

The Okol Lake Park golf course is situated at an altitude of around 1,000 meters and offers breathtaking views of Iskar Lake, the largest lake in Bulgaria, the distant Rila Mountains, and the popular Borovets ski resort. It was designed by one of the top architects from EGD, Robin Hiseman, and is intended to be the first golf course in Bulgaria to achieve GEO accreditation.

The London Airlinks Golf Course is an exciting new links-style golf course, featuring Toptracer® Range technology, located in London. It has been constructed on the former Heston Aerodrome, which was famous for being the site of Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain's "Peace for our time" speech in 1938. Heston Aerodrome was London's main airport before Heathrow opened in 1946.

Te Arai Links is located a few miles south of the Tom Doak-designed Tara Iti course on the east coast of New Zealand’s North Island. It is planned to have two courses, The North and The South course. The South Course will be opened first, and the North Course is expected to open in the fall of 2023. In 2023, the only way to play Te Arai Links is by staying on-site in the available accommodation. From October 2023, greens fee players will be allowed.

Cabot Point golf course, located above the Atlantic Ocean and designed to take advantage of the natural features of Point Hardy's landscape, offers a one-of-a-kind golfing experience in the Caribbean. The course, created by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, makes use of the area's diverse terrain, including rocky outcrops, lush vegetation, tropical bays and sandy beaches.

La Réserve Golf Links, set to open in December 2023, is a golf course designed to blend in with nature, located near a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Former sugar cane fields have been transformed with native grasses to promote biodiversity, and the course's development is working towards GEO Certified Development status, the global standard for sustainable design and construction. Access is limited to club members and Heritage Resorts residents.

Greg Norman has designed a nine-hole short course, called Avalon Links, at Aurora Anguilla Resort & Golf Club in the Caribbean. The course offers breathtaking views of the Caribbean Sea and a variety of shot angles, distances, and design elements to cater to golfers of all skill levels. The course is both playable and enjoyable.

Set adjacent to Wicker Point peninsula along the stunning shores of Lake Martin, Wicker Point Golf Club is a private course defined by serene pine plantations, meandering creeks and spectacular lakefront holes comprising the back nine. Wicker Point will open in the summer of 2023.

The Lido Golf Club, designed by C.B. Macdonald, opened on Long Island in 1914 and was considered by many to be on par with other C.B. Macdonald designs like Pine Valley and National Golf Links. However, the course was destroyed by the U.S. Navy during World War II when they acquired the property for use as a military base. The current project aims to restore the original Lido Golf Club to its former glory.

The Omni PGA Frisco Resort, opening in May 2023, will be a modern golf destination for players of all ages and abilities, located near the new PGA of America headquarters. It will feature simulation and coaching experiences and two 18-hole championship golf courses designed by Gil Hanse (Fields Ranch East) and Beau Welling (Fields Ranch West), a lighted 10-hole short course and a 2-acre putting course and entertainment area called The Dance Floor.

The Huxham brothers, Darrell and Warren, who also designed the first course at Golf La Tempête, have been appointed to design the second course for this semi-private club located 30 minutes south of Quebec City. Right next to the existing course, the new course will offer a simply outstanding stadium and parkland experience and will be among the best in Canada. The new course is to open in 2023. 

Cabot Citrus Farms is a new addition to Cabot's collection of golf and real estate properties, located in Florida's Nature Coast region. The 1,200-acre property features natural beauty such as elevation changes, sandy soil, and towering trees, and was previously known as World Woods Golf Club. In 2023, the property will re-open with two 18-hole golf courses, a par-3 course, a new 9-hole course, a new clubhouse, and an exceptional practice facility. Guests can also enjoy luxury accommodations, dining options, and other amenities.

Landmand Golf Club in Nebraska opened its 18-hole golf course, designed by King-Collins Golf Course Design, to the public at the end of 2022 so technically they have already opened their doors. The course has been developed by the Andersen family, who have been farming the surrounding area for four generations. The name "Landmand" means "farmer" in Danish, which pays homage to the family's Scandinavian heritage. If you want to play here in 2023, you need to be quick as not many tee times are left. 

The Tree Farm, located near Aiken, South Carolina, is a modern golf course designed to blend with and respect the natural landscape. Unlike traditional courses, it will have minimal building structures. Before seeking Doak’s advice, PGA Tour pro Zac Blair himself completed a routing concept for The Tree Farm, but he had some doubts. Now, after Doak pieced together the holes on the Aiken property, Blair is glad he reached out for help.
