Golf in Morocco

Morocco does not have a very long tradition of being a golf destination. But European golfers have slowly discovered the North African country over the past decades. With its location close to Europe – no more than a 3 hour flight from many European airports – the pleasant all year round climate and 45 golf courses to choose from, ensures Morocco is a golf destination that should not be overlooked.

Golf in Morocco
Golf courses in Morocco are mainly focused on golf tourists. When planning a golf trip to Morocco, you will find the highest concentration of golf courses around Marrakech and Casablanca. Agadir in the south is also home to quite a few nice golf courses. You will also find a few golf courses around Fes and Tangier, but these cities are less suitable for just a golf trip. Combining golf with cultural activities in that case would be advisable. Currently there are 45 golf clubs in Morocco and as Morocco is booming as a golf destination - although still mainly visited by French golfers - new golf courses are built every year. Some notable golf courses that just recently opened are The Michlifen Golf & Country Club, Tazegzout Golf and Golf Teelal. The best golf courses in Morocco are Mazagan Beach & Golf Resort, Assoufid Golf Club and PalmGolf Marrakech Ourika. Maintaining and keeping a golf course in great shape is tough in Morocco, so it's wise to keep checking Leadingcourses.com as golf courses can quickly rise or drop in our rankings. This has to do with the climate - very dry and sunny - and the management of the golf course. The climate of Morocco is similar to that of southern California, with lush forests in the northern and central mountain ranges of the country, giving way to drier conditions and inland deserts further southeast. The Moroccan coastal plains experience remarkably moderate temperatures even in summer, owing to the effect of the cold Canary Current off its Atlantic coast. South of Agadir and east of Jerada near the Algerian borders, arid and desert climate starts to prevail. Tourism is one of the most important sectors in Moroccan economy. Most of the visitors to Morocco are European, with French nationals making up almost 20% of all visitors. Most Europeans visit in April and autumn. Morocco's relatively high number of tourists has been helped by its location—Morocco is close to Europe and it attracts visitors to its beaches. Tourism is focused on Morocco's culture, such as its ancient cities (like Meknes, Fes and Marrakech) but golf is growing slowly but steadily. Agadir is a major coastal resort and accounts for a third of all Moroccan occupied hotel beds. It’s also a base for tours to the Atlas Mountains. Getting to Morocco is quite easy as there are many airports to chose from. The busiest airports in Morocco are Casablanca-Mohammed V, Marrakech and Agadir.

Royal Golf Dar Es Salam

The Montgomerie Marrakech
Played the Montgomerie again today after a tournament was off. It was am enjoyable round as the golf course is in good shape, especially the Greens are true. The bunkers continue to be solid and the Fairways have a nice green contrast to the rest of the course (see pics). Montgomerie is the closest golf course to the Marrakech Medina and the only course where you can see …

Samanah Golf
Un diseño de Jack Niklaus que no abrió hasta 2009. A 15 minutos al sur de la ciudad de Marrakech. Just 15 minutes South of Marrakech: a proper design of Jack Niklaus, that is quite noticeable on the shape of his bunkers. Quite open fairways. Lovely terrace at the club house that allows the players to enjoy some lunch before the round, (The service is not the fastest). …
