Golf courses in South Ayrshire

On 17 October 1860, a handful of golfers walked out onto the dunes at Prestwick. They had no idea they were about to play the very first Open Championship. That golf history is palpably present throughout South Ayrshire, on every links course you play along the Ayrshire coast. Leading Courses favourites include Trump Turnberry Resort and Royal Troon Golf Club. Turnberry is one of the most iconic golf resorts in the world, high above the coast with views of Ailsa Craig and the Irish coast in the distance. Royal Troon is an Open Championship course with the famous Postage Stamp as its ninth hole — a par-3 of barely a hundred metres that has brought the world's finest golfers to their knees on more than one occasion. Prestwick Golf Club meanwhile has the greatest historical significance: the birthplace of The Open, with holes that have been played for more than 160 years. South Ayrshire is well served by Glasgow Prestwick Airport, just seven minutes by train from Ayr. The climate is slightly milder than east Scotland due to the influence of the warm Gulf Stream, but a waterproof remains essential here too.
