Otago Golf Club

Prachtig tegen de heuvels van Dunedin gelegen golfcourse. De club bestaat al sinds 1871 dus een club met een lange historie. De meeste holes zijn uitdagend te noemen. De greens zijn vrij traag, hetgeen je hier niet zou verwachten. Voor NZ begrippen is de nogal duur.

Otago is de oudste golfclub van Dunedin, en gaat daar ook prat op. Vriendelijke ontvangst op een overigens stille baan met een desolaat clubhuis. De eerste 6 holes waren vrij vlak en niet opwindend. In het vervolg waren er spectaculaire holes (met name de 11e), waarbij het goed was een cart te hebben. Afslagplaatsen en fairways waren verzorgd. De greens hadden een ruwe grassoort waardoor ze traag waren, maar wel goed hun lijn hielden. Alles bij elkaar een baan die zeker de moeite waard is om te spelen maar niet helemaal aan de gewekte verwachtingen voldeed.

What a cool club!

The oldest golf club on the southern hemisphere,1871 that is. We were warmly welcomed by Shelley Duncan, the local golf professional. With some good local knowledge, tips and tricks we got ourselves underway. The first tee gives you an immediate image of what to expect. Huge and obviously pretty old pine tree's cover the very neatly clipped fairway on the left. After the first hole, you cross the road to four holes that are somewhat apart from the rest. Although these holes aren't bad, they are different than what you get once your back on the main part of the course.

Well designed, fun, undulated, challenging and beautiful is how I would describe it. Greens are tricky to read, rolling at a nice pace, but could be equal in my opinion. Pity we did found quite a lot of pitchmarks out there, bunkers are not very well looked after by the golfers as well. But I cannot be bothered by all this if you arrive at the 11th. A downhill PAR-4 where the one and only Arnold Palmer drove the green back in 19something well before I was born.

Funny thing is the ski lift which brings you up from the 11th green to the 12th tee. HUGE pine tree's are waiting to catch your balls there... All and all a very very nice experience to play on and very affordable as well.
