Club de Golf Sant Cugat

Campo ubicado en poblacióm cetcana a Barcelona. Segindo campo más antiguo de España. Fué el primer campo donde jugó como profesional Severiano Ballesteros.

The initial design of this parkland gem was made by the one and only H.S. Colt and the club was called “New Barcelona Golf Club” in its early years. It was founded in 1914 by the Barcelona Traction & Light Power, the company who electrified the city of Barcelona and built the railway that still connects the town with Plaza Catalunya and the Barcelona downtown. As expected the club also has a lot of history... they hosted several Spanish Open tournaments, tournaments of different stages to the European Tour and Ladies European Tour. In March 1974 one 17 year old junior named Severiano Ballesteros played his first professional tournament here as Spanish Open Championship was played at Sant Cugat. José María Olazábal won his first Spanish Junior Championship here in 1979. While in 1997 Sergio García played (and won) Catalonia Open, his first professional tournament, he played the tournament as still being an amateur. The last page of his history was written in 2012 at Open Peugeot Alps Tour (won by Pablo Larrazabal), Javier Ballesteros made his debut among professionals on the same course his father did 38 years ago.

While the course is not very long it requires a lot of precision especially with your approach shots to the greens which are well protected by the bunkers and in many cases the trees. This short but lovely treelined layout has 19 holes - two holes 9, one is Par-4 which I played and another one is downhill Par-3 which was closed for play. Original clubhouse/starting house was located between current 10th and 11th hole and it is still present now. You will find quite a few unique and interesting holes at Sant Cugat - mostly 7th,8th and 11th which are also my favourite holes here. They are all great Par-4 holes, short and technical with not much room for errors on your approach shots. 7th is 90* dogleg left where a good drive over the trees and bushes on the left bank will get you quite close to the elevated green. 8th is an uphill and slight dogleg left - if you feel very confident with your driver a draw over the left edge will get you a few meters to the dance floor. 11th is downhill and sharp dogleg left with very narrow green protected by high trees - long iron or a hybrid off the tee will do here. Besides these I also liked the slightly uphill and dogleg right Par-4 6th with interesting green. Precision is the key on the short Par-3 14th with elevated green. Short and slightly downhill Par-4 15th hole towards the clubhouse where a good drive over the left corner will get you close to the well protected green. Short Par-4 16th and long and demanding Par-3 17th where mishits to the right are not recommended.

The expanding population and real estate developments unfortunately took its toll here too as you have to cross the town streets quite a few times on this once probably peaceful countryside course which is now surrounded by houses and local roads.

Course condition was good with no major complaints. I found the greens to be quite tricky to read. Driving range is a bit of site. Clubhouse is charming with nice garden. Pro-shop is well stocked too.

Well recommend if you are in Barcelona even though the green fee is quite expensive.

An entertaining course to play. One has the feeling that the course is still close to the original layout, which is attributed to Harry Colt. It's quite short and has elements, like a 90 degree dogleg, that you wouldn't build today as a course architect. But all this has a special attraction for me, I enjoyed the game there very much, as did my eldest son, who is a really skilled golfer. The clubhouse, probably from the 20s or 30s of the last century, with its special atmosphere and good service contributes to this experience. We found the kitchen in the clubhouse quite fine. The green fee, on the other hand, may be a bit too high.

No entiendo el porqué de las puntaciones tan bajas.

Un campo cuidado, con los greenes siempre impecable y super rapidos. Una muy buena opción para jugar cerca de Barcelona. Un campo más bien corto, aunque divertido.

Añadir que en restaurante se come bien.

Ver old compact course. Short in general with some interesting holder but a bit too narrow to breath. Some holes look awkward and require some deep knowledge of the local tricks... Very close to Barcelona and pleasant atmosphere though.
