Swinley Forest Golf Club

Swinley is a joy to play and after arriving through its low-key entrance and making your way to the clubhouse you step out onto the terrace for amazing vista down the 1st and 18th. This, together with one of the best lunches in golf, really add to the experience provided by a wonderful golf course. The set of Par 3s are sublime, as are two fantastic drivable par 4s at 3 and 11. Colt did a great job with a piece of land just right for golf. Swinley has also begun to transform itself with conditioning getting a greater focus and many initiatives to improve the course. Lots of these have worked well, such as the opening up of the views on the 9th by taking out rhododendrons. Others, less so. The two disappointing changes are the softening of the greens on 15 and 17, both of which were unnecessary and, in my opinion, worse for it. These were the two best holes at Swinley - why change them? Whilst the course belongs to the members, I feel it is no different from a piece of art. Nobody would “touch up” or “improve” or “soften” the Mona Lisa if they owned it. Hopefully no more architectural changes are made.

Profitant d'une visite à Ascot je me suis renseigné et eu la bonne surprise de voir que Swinley acceptait les visiteurs (et j'ai même appris sur le parcours qu'une fois payé l'on pouvait jouer autant qu'on le souhaitait dans la journée).

Le club house me rappelle un peu celui de Morfontaine en France et le parcours a été designé par Harry Colt (un contemporain de Tom Simpson) avec certaines similitudes avec le parcours français.

Swinley est un de mes parcours préférés car même si les fairways sont un peu "brulés" ils n'en demeurent pas moins excellents tout comme les greens et le reste du parcours.

Chaque trou demande une veritable stratégie ce qui rend le parcours excitant (d'ailleurs mon 2ème tour était bien meilleur que le 1er).

Le parcours offre pas moins de 5 par 3 avec tous un design bien different. Il n'y a en revanche que 2 par 5 ce qui nous donne seulement un par 69 mais où chaque coup devra être mûrement réfléchi. Les arbres et les rough rendent le parcours vraiment unique et avec un calme total une totale sérénité maintenue grâce au nombre limité de joueurs sur le parcours.

Swinley est un parcours qui gagne à être connu et devrait être joué et malgré sa taille limitée il offre un veritable challenge aux joueurs!

Deze baan is een meesterwerk van H. COLT die ook SUNNINGDALE ontwierp. Prachtige golfbaan doorheen heidelandschap met zandgrond en pijnbomen. Veel hoogteverschillen, Prachtige natuur. Veel variatie. Elke hole is uniek. De par 3s zijn aartsmoeilijk. Foute slagen kunnen haast niet hersteld worden. Ik verkies deze baan boven Sunningdale. Beide staan in de Wereld Top 100 maar ik denk dat deze baan zal vooruitschuiven gezien een aantal verbeteringen aangebracht zijn o.a. nieuwe tees. Een unieke golfervaring!

Swinley Forest is a delectably English golf club set in the heart of the Berkshire sand-belt on a secluded parcel of land boasting beautiful heather, gorse and pines.

It’s not only one of the most charming courses, in an area blessed with a plethora of wonderful heathland venues, but also one of the best.

There is certainly an air of exclusivity, privacy and tradition about the place, but where the welcome was as warm as any I’ve received, and the ambience only adds to the experience. Out on the course the only things you are likely to hear are the rumble of a train dashing down the side of holes six, seven and eight or the odd bark from a golfer’s four-legged companion.
