The best links golf in the west of Scotland is largely contained along the Ayrshire coast between Turnberry and the surrounds of Troon and Prestwick. but there are pockets where fine examples of the best traditional golf can be found. One of the finest examples is Southerness, truly one of Scotland's hidden golf assets, with its spectacular views across the coast of Galloway and to the mountains of the Lake District. Mackenzie Ross, who rebuilt Turnberry after it was dug up to make way for an airfield during World War 11, was the man responsible for creating the beautiful Southerness layout fifteen miles from the County town of Dumfries on the shores of the Solway Firth.

We waren hier 9 jaar geleden al eens en omdat we het zo’n geweldige baan vonden wilden we deze links course nog eens spelen. We werden niet teleurgesteld. Mooie en gevarieerde holes, goed onderhouden. Omdat de holes in allerlei richtingen lopen en er ook flink wat (lichte) doglegs zijn is het er met wind, zoals wij ook vandaag weer hadden, lastig spelen. Bij vrijwel ieder schot komt de wind uit een andere hoek. De zijwind was nog het lastigst te trotseren. Clubhuis en shop zijn eenvoudig, zoals gewoonlijk in UK.
De club is trots op de regionale en landelijke amateurkampioenschappen die het heeft mogen houden, blijkt uit de borden.

In terms of quality this sturdy course flatlines at a very high level throughout the round. There aren’t the extreme highs and lows that other venues of a similar rating might dish up. Some people will like this steadiness whilst others may prefer a course that delivers a few moments of magic at the expense of a few dud holes.
Either way you look at it Southerness is an excellent golf course and a supreme test, particularly of your driving; not only in reaching this remote location 15 miles south of Dumfries but most notably from the tee.
Echte links course, smalle (un)fairways en lekker veel wind. Beetje stijfjes qua entourage en slecht voor je handicap!
