About Crail Golfing Society
The old Balcomie Links in the old burgh of Crail near St Andrews is one of Scotland's finest golfing treasures. There is great antiquity here. The Crail Golfing Society was founded in 1786, at a time when there were only six other golf clubs in existence anywhere in the world. Set in an exposed corner on the most easterly point of the Kingdom of Fife on a promontory known as Fife Ness, the present course remains much as it did after Old Tom Morris from St Andrews laid out the first nine holes in 1895 and then added a second nine four years later. Balcomie has many admirers from all over the world and when the Open Championship is at St Andrews it is not unusual to see the famous faces of the game's greatest players taking on this delightful little golf course.

We played the Craighead Links Course on a trip to play The Old Course and some other big names in the area. I played the Balcomie Links 9 years ago and remembered the great hospitality during the 2010 Open week. An other interesting fact is that the Craighead Links was the first design (and built) by Gil Hansen in Europe. He supposedly was on the bulldozer himself months and the whole development was less then 1 million pound for everything(!) I think that was probably 1/3mof his fee designing Castle Stuart ;) later in his career.
Again the reception was very hospitable, nice driving range (a lot of old courses in Scotland don't have driving ranges) and the view of the clubhouse (on Balcomie) is magnificent. The Craighead Course is a bit more inland then Balcomie and starts just left of the driving range. The front nine looks a bit open and is a good warm up. Don't be deceived by the open relative simple impression Craighead gives you there are some strategic pot bunkers.
The back nine was definitely better then the front nine in my opinion. Hole 10 a short par 4 but no pushover. Hole 11, an uphill par 4, with a frontal wall going left to right in the middle of the fairway around 200 meters aptly named Muir hole 12 driving back over the wall down to a blind green. Hole 13 a beautiful short par 3 with great views of the sea. Hole 15 you have a blind approach over a dike. The greens were also of a great quality and they keep the stimp between 7 and 9 otherwise the wind blows the balls of the green...
When we played there was a thunderstorm approaching and we were called of the course, it was just in time because the lightning was really close. When we were waiting for the weather to improve I asked what website they used to check the weather the answer was surprising; there are so many golfcourses in the area the manager would just call the course in the direction the wind was blowing from and ask them what the weather was doing... amazing and very effective.
Anyways when playing one course I would advise to go for the traditional old school links Balcomie but if you have time Craighead is a great hidden gem not to be missed!
