Silloth on Solway Golf Club

Well I thought Seascale GC and the 20£ I paid there was a superdeal... Silloth on Solway is as good as most great links and that only for around 50£! A hidden gem for sure! It has everything, short par 3's, a few blind shots, holes where you can just bomb it and a few where the ball is on the fairway or gone... A great course in flawless condition when I was there mid September this year. I like the little sign in the green bunker on the 18th saying " if you have hit into this bunker please donate 50p to the charity box in the bar". Everybody can see you from the bar so you better pay ;) A must if you are in the northwest of England!

We had a superb day at Silloth which started with a very warm welcome from the Pro and continued with every member we met. The facilities were just fine but this was all about the golf course which is a very top notch links course. It feels like it could be on the other side of the Irish Sea with dunes throughout and it reminded me of a mini Royal County Down. Silloth is an absolute must stop-off on the way to or from Scotland.

Silloth is gelegen op een wat lastig bereikbare plaats aan de noord-west kant van Engeland. Wij waren daar op weg naar Schotland. Het is een echte links-course met alles dat daarbij hoort. Het is een traditionele club met flink veel historie. De binnenkomst is erg prettig. Een mooi goed verzorgd, beetje tropisch, clubhuis. Aan de gevel de klok die voor alle golfers de tijd aangeeft. In de Pro-shop (klein, knus) worden we vriendelijk ontvangen. We zijn wat laat maar dat blijkt geen probleem. De baan, die als echt goed bekend staat, wordt nog niet door veel gasten overlopen. De eerste tee is maar 20 passen vanaf de pro-shop en geeft een mooie blik op wat komen gaat. Geonduleerde fairways.

Het is 9-out en 9-in baan met onderweg geen half-way house. Neem dus voldoende drank en voeding mee de baan in. Door de vele hoogteverschillen is het best een stevige wandeling. De holes zijn erg afwisselend en dat maakt het extra leuk maar ook uitdagend. Goed scoren is hier een kunst. Buiten de fairway is het beruchte hoge gras en dan zijn ballen al snel verloren. Een birdie-guide (GBP 5,-) is een prima investering. Het is een goed boekje. Er zijn een paar holes waarbij de green vanaf de fairway niet zichtbaar is. In die gevallen is meten middels GPS wel handig.

Er zijn een aantal holes die echt heel fantastisch mooi zijn, de rest is gewoon mooi. De foto's geven m.i. een goed beeld. Deze baan is een aanrader en het bijbehorende stadje lijkt ook gezellig. De prijs is heel redelijk voor een dergelijke kwaliteit. Ze scoort ook hoog op andere beoordelingssites.

In my eyes Silloth is a golf course that has the ability to transcend your typical ‘championship links’.

It has charm, character, intrigue and an identity all of its own but at the same time presents the truest, and quite often, stiffest of challenges to the golfer. It's an inspirational golf course with an endless collection of brilliant golf holes.

the reason why I personally hold it in such high regard… the fun element. In addition to being a true challenge the course has three key aspects which tick all the boxes that I look for in a truly great golf course; movement of land, unique and varied green sites plus the quality of the turf. Silloth scores top marks in all of these categories.

The lightly-bunkered fairways toss and turn like a crumpled duvet but not only that these billowing humps and bumps contain vast amounts of strategy as they wend their way through and over the large sand dunes.
