We arrived in the afternoon and felt very welcome. As we didn't know exactly what to expect, we were very surprised to find we were playing at the meadows rolling over the hills. Sheep were kept off the greens by low fences. Beautiful holes and beautiful views. Well worth the trip!

I’m easily pleased. All I ask for is good turf, natural movement in the land and engaging greens. Simply give me all of those on a golf course and I’m a happy bunny.
Sadly most courses don’t offer any of the above. A relatively small number have one of the trio whilst the saying ‘two out of three ain’t bad’ can be applied to even fewer venues. However, at Appleby it’s a case of tick, tick, tick.
Nestled at the foothills of the Cumbrian Mountains and less than five minutes from the busy cross-Pennine A66 this moorland course is unassumingly good.

Fantastic course in brilliant condition

Disappointed with the condition of the golf course, lacked care and attention, no where near as good as previous years, time to play elsewhere.

Appleby
With stunning views of the Pennines, Lake District and hills of the Yorkshire Dales, Appleby GC is set in a remote and idyllic spot. The course is on common land, so has to contend with the presence of grazing animals - the greens are protected by wires and there are no fairway bunkers. The greens, however, are quite superbly maintained, playing well throughout the year, and with the land being free-draining, the course is generally always playable. The course is not overly long at just under 6000 yards (par 68), but with no par 5s and seven par 4s of over 400 yards, it is not an easy par to achieve, particularly when the wind is blowing, as it invariably seems to. It is a tough but fair test, and tremendously good value for visitors. With a new steward in charge of the clubhouse, there is a good choice of food on the menu and a very welcoming atmosphere for visitors. I can thoroughly recommend Appleby GC to anyone who hasn't yet played it. Read more at http://www.golftoday.co.uk/clubhouse/coursedir/cumbria/appleby.html?oo=41439051#rsEMUYTp1ps8p4w5.99
