How to find the golf course that actually fits you

Trying to compare forty individual courses is exhausting and gets you nowhere. Start one level up instead, with the highest rated courses in the region or city you are heading to. So read past the score and look for the things that decide your day:

• Pace of play. Is a round four hours or closer to six? On a hot afternoon that is the difference between a great day and a long one.
• Condition, in the season you are going. Greens in April and greens in October are not the same greens. Look for recent reviews, not the best ones.
• The welcome. Some clubs treat visitors as guests, others as an interruption. Golfers always mention it.
• Value, not price. Plenty of golfers happily pay more and say it was worth every euro. Others feel short changed at half the price.

And read a few simply for the pleasure of it. Reviews are full of things no brochure would ever mention: the par three where everybody stops to take a photo, the halfway house that does the best tostada on the coast, the greenkeeper who chats to every visitor, the view from the twelfth tee that nobody warned you about. Those details are often the ones that make you pick one course over another, and they are the reason golfers come home saying it was even better than they hoped.

Two or three recent reviews will tell you more than any brochure.

Save the ones that appeal as you go. It sounds obvious, but it changes how you choose: instead of trying to hold six courses in your head, you end up with a shortlist you can compare properly, share with whoever you are traveling with, and come back to that evening.

It also solves the group problem. Everyone can look at the same three or four options rather than debating from memory.

Once you have found the course that fits, the only thing left to get wrong is waiting.
