Golf courses in Lancashire

Lancashire has along its coast a concentration of top courses that in England is only matched by Kent. The Lancashire Golf Coast, running from Blackpool in the north to just above Liverpool, has within a relatively small area a cluster of links courses each of which justifies a visit in its own right. Leading Courses favourites include Royal Birkdale Golf Club and Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club. Royal Birkdale has long been regarded by experts as the fairest and most complete Open Championship course in England: no gimmicks, no tricks, just outstanding links golf. Royal Lytham is slightly more inland but with its red-brick clubhouse and shared Open Championship history has an atmosphere found nowhere else. Formby Golf Club and Hillside Golf Club are two other excellent links courses in the region that receive too little attention from international visitors. Lancashire is well served by Manchester Airport, an hour's drive from most courses along the coast. The climate is northern English and changeable, but the links courses are at their very best with a good breeze. Greenfees at the Open Championship venues are steep but justified.
