Cape Kidnappers

I'm a bit torn apart when it comes to this golf course, it was the course that made me go to NZ for a golfing trip in the first place, however, it turned out to be the biggest "disappointment" (if you can call it that) of the trip.

Let me explain, based on the widely circuited and most famous picture of the course (the drone/helicopter shoot of the fairways above the cliff), I was expecting the course to present you with magnificent views of cliffs and a dramatic see side, similar to what you get when playing Old Head or Thracian Cliffs, the reality however is very different. Aside from hole number 12 and 15 you hardly get this experience, and even there, it is not as overwhelming as you would expect, in that sense, the course was disappointing.

That being said, if had not build this expectation in my head, objectively speaking, the course and facilities are very impressive. First of all, you get to take a 15 minute drive on private property, which I taught was just insane (impressive, but still), when you arrive at the clubhouse, there is a beautiful sense of misconception, the clubhouse, from outside, does not look like much and blends nicely into the surroundings, on the inside however, the feeling is completely different, tastefully decorated and boosting with space, truly nice contrast to what you see from outside.

The staff is very friendly and accommodating, not surprising, I was one out of maybe 10 golfers on that day, the practice facilities are nice and well maintained as is the course.

As mentioned above, I was expecting something different from this one, if I disregard my expectations, the course really is fun to play and in excellent condition. The front nine are positioned inland and have a lot of up/down tricky green positions and well placed traps. the back nine run more along the sea-line with a bit flatter layout and maybe easier to play, except if you get there on a windy day, than your up for some long tee shots.

All in all, very impressive, excellent maintenance and hospitality and well worth playing, just don't relay to much on the cliffside photos, you don't get the views from the course.

Loved every moment at Cape Kidnappers! The views are amazing and the conditions are perfect ⛳️ played really well and we had all the time as we were the only one on the golfcourse. True miljonair golf.

Depuis longtemps je voulais envoyer mon drone en l’air et photographier l’unique Cape K. Et après plusieurs années, m’y voilà.

Attention, tu risques d’être déçu car le parcours est moins spectaculaire que sur les photos me disait on. Il n’en fut rien. J’ai pris un grand plaisir à le jouer (en plus j’ai été invité). Les 4 premiers trous sont un peu décevants à mon goût mais le reste est de grande grande qualité. Le vent était absent et mes drives plutôt droit ce qui a rendu le parcours pas très difficile. Mais si le vent se lève j’imagine l’enfer.

Plusieurs trous sont très très spectaculaire et la qualité du parcours est top. La encore il faut une voiture (pas mon idéal golfique) mais bon on fait avec et puis les vues compensent. Au final il n’y a pas de moment ennuyeux sur ce Tom Doak et un parcours à jouer une fois dans sa vie!

Een oprijlaan van 8,4 kilometer, persoonlijke ontvangst met valet-parking, clubs werden schoongemaakt, mooi ingericht clubhuis en voor niet Nieuw Zeelanders dubbele greenfee van 500 NZ$. De baan biedt prachtige uitzichten vanaf de 100meter hoge klifs over Hawkes Bay, Fairways als tapijt, Greens als biljartlaken. Nr 22 van de wereld naar eigen zeggen.

Machtige spectaculaire golfbaan die bovenop grootse natuurkliffen getekend werd door Tom Doak.

Doak is gekend voor zijn natuurlijke implementatie en ook hier heeft hij knap werk verricht. De holes slingeren zich doorheen de golvende natuur met veel ravijnen en afgronden. De par 5 hole 16 is voor mij de signaturehole: een afslag bovenop de punt van een der hoogste kliffen naar een vallei beneden met een green die terug boven ligt. De greens zijn groot en schitterend. De bunkerplaatsing is soms duivels. Heel diep en in veelvoud voor de greens. Vergeet niet om de pinposities te vragen want clubkeuze om de green aan te vallen is heel belangrijk.

Wie hier wil spelen moet eerst googelen om een indruk te krijgen van de verbluffende grootsheid van deze baan!
