Humewood Golf Club

Als je dan toch in Port Elizabeth bent en wilt golfen, ga dan naar Humewood. Leuke links baan. Makkelijk een tee time verkregen door een mail te sturen. Enorm aardige pro’s. Kregen zelfs korting (dan zijn ze altijd aardig natuurlijk) omdat we in het nabij gelegen Radisson hotel verbleven. Gespeeld met een trolley omdat we liever lopen. Het was echter warm en voor ons speelde een 4 bal, waardoor we toch 4,5 uur onderweg waren. Fairways waren kei hard met veel kale plekken. Bij de ochtend wedstrijd van de club was aangegeven dat je mocht plaatsen binnen een stoklengte. Greens waren heel erg mooi en goed (stimp 8 werd aangegeven). Clubhuis is erg oud. Ben benieuwd hoe lang deze club nog bestaat. Waarom de leden niet zelf de verfkwast ter hand nemen snap ik niet of laten de leden een beetje meer betalen. Het interieur lijkt wel uit de jaren 1960/1970. Ook het clubhuis en de kleedkamers zien er onverzorgd uit. Al met al geen vervelende ervaring maar in Nederland zijn we dit soort antieke clubhuizen niet gewend.

Brilliant course, stern test in the wind, one way hitting driver and 7 Iron on a Par 5 the other way hitting three well hit 3 woods and still short on hole number 13. Greens are immaculate, great views, great greens, fairways wide and fair, tough rough. will recommend this course any day.

The closest you will get playing the "Old Course " on your doorstep at an absolute fraction of the price compared to many other top courses in South Africa and abroad. A true links experience on a remote seaside setting (no traffic noise / imposing house estates on this course) with views of the ocean off all tees. End your round with refreshments in the Club house overlooking the the 18th / 1st fairway with unobstructed views of the ocean bordering the course. A true gem highly rated by golfing greats such as Bobby Locke and Gary Player.

Arriving at a huge clubhouse with magnificent views over Algoa Bay and the Indian Ocean we played the 18 holes par 72 links course. Because we know that wind is an important factor we played in the morning when the prevailing wind is still moderate. Practice facilities are limited. The course is undulated and walking is possible. The undulated fairways and humps will kick you ball often in position you donot want. The thick coastal bush is very thick and when your ball enters the rough the 3 minutes looking golf rule is for sure not enough to find it.

Off course no water hazards but doglegs, bunkers(some difficult to spot) make sure you need your A-game on this course, The greens sloping from back to front so when too long difficult putt left..

After your game, successful or not, the 19th hole with help to see others suffering and enjoy the view and the food/drinks.

This Links course is far cheaper than the Scottish ones and looks the same.
