The Links at Spanish Bay
About The Links at Spanish Bay
Meandering among sweeping sand dunes along 17-Mile Drive, The Links at Spanish Bay - designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr., Tom Watson and Frank 'Sandy' Tatum - unveils some of the most spectacular seaside views in Pebble Beach. The rolling fairways gently flow through and around the gorgeous dunescape, briefly weaving between towering Monterey Pines, before returning to the white sand of Spanish Bay Beach for a thrilling finish along the coast. The spectacular setting offers panoramic ocean views of some of 17-Mile Drive’s most scenic stretches, showing off whitecaps bouncing on the power Pacific and a brilliant sunset. The Links at Spanish Bay is very much a sensory overload, with the smell of the beach carried in by a cooling ocean breeze, the sight of the spectacular jagged coastline, and the sound of the famed bagpiper leading you home at the end of a twilight round.

I like to joke that this is the best golf course I played without ever seeing it. unfortunately, on the day I have played it, the fog was so thick that we hardly ever got to see further than a few hundred yards, most of the time, we did not even see the direction in which the first shoot flew after hitting it with a driver. Luckily, there were a few moments when the weather cleared to the point that we were almost able to see the flag, that is when I took the pictures that go together with my review. Unfortunately, this is quite common in this area especially in the morning hours, so if you decide to play, and I encourage you to do so, you might be better off with an afternoon tee time. My suggestion would be to play one of the higher positioned golf courses in the morning, like Del Monte or Poopy Hills, and the courses that are adjacent to the coastline in the afternoon, you might have better luck this way, at least if you see some fog rolling in.
As far as the facilities go, this one has most of them at the club itself, so proper locker rooms, clubhouse with restaurant and accommodation and a well-stocked pro-shop. The range however, is not nearby, you would have to utilize either the one from PBGL or Spyglass Hills and they are a bit of a drive away, so it might be a little inconvenient for a morning tee time. There is however a chipping/putting area next to the first tee, it does give you a bit of practice opportunity before you start playing.
As mentioned, we have more or less played in foggy and quite cold conditions for this area, therefore, unfortunately, I cannot really give any valuable comments on the appearance of the course or the views, what I can say though is, the layout is quite fun, in better weather I would imagine you can hit some interesting shoots (we didn’t really play with the driver since it was impossible to track the ball and after losing a few, I started to use my mid irons from the tee and at least know that I’ll find it somewhere on the fairway), the maintenance level was also very good and I did like the fact that water comes into play on some holes. It is also a good combination of beachside/forest located holes.
On a sunny or at least not foggy day, I would imagine playing the course would be great.

Another great course in the 17 Mile drive area. It can play very long and difficult off the back tees if the wind is blowing. A bit expensive for what you get.

Moeilijke linksbaan met prachtige holes aan zee. Super greens. Moeilijk circuit dat veel nadenken vergt en waar een foute slag onmiddellijk afgestraft wordt. Heel uitdagend bij felle wind. Behoort tot de prachtige groep rond Pebble Beach, Monterey, Californie. Een aanrader.
