Situated on the shoreline of a rugged peninsula, The Links Portmarnock was the first golf course that International Management Group (IMG) developed in Ireland and opened for play in 1995. It was therefore fitting that Bernhard Langer chose this magnificent setting to design his first links course being a three time winner of the Irish Open at nearby Portmarnock Golf Club and The Royal Dublin Golf Club. Along with architect Stan Eby they designed a course that is a challenge for all golfers, set in the grounds of the old Jameson Estate of St. Marnocks, the course has played host to professional and amateur events including 2008 and 2009 Ladies Irish Open

The Links Portmarnock is located within a picturesque coastline, just 15 minutes by car from Dublin Airport. It is the first Irish golf course of the IMG Group which was opened in 1995. It was therefore fitting that Bernhard Langer chose this beautiful dune landscape to design his first Links Course together with architect Stan Eby. There are some great sea views, especially on tee 10, but most of the time you can't see the water. With the mostly present wind the course is a real golfing challenge and ball losses have to be included in the calculation. The hotel of the same name is suitable for the overnight stay as a green fee reduction is also connected with it.

Zones de retombées de balle et fairways pas assez larges. Golf pour de très bon joueurs lors de journée avec de forts vents. Vues et ambiances magnifiques. Greenfees trop cher.

The day I played here could not have been more Irish and difficult. Windfactor 7, windgusts with some drizzle. The lady at the reception was not sure whether the course would open today. I did play and it had it's ups and downs. Ups as nobody was out there, that was it for the ups... It is always great to play when the weather is nice but you also need to be prepared when things are different. It was great fun lining up 30 degrees to the right or left in order to get the ball near the middle of the fairway. Today was a real challenge. The night before I drove in from the K Club where we played the ryder cup course and this highly ranked links course would be a good one to end the Ireland trip. Watching Tiger win the masters in the Jameson bar was an experience by itself. The hotel next to the course is a good luxury stay if you decide to play some courses in the area. Another reason for staying here is the nice 75 euro discount on the steep 175 green fee.
The general impression about the club is a little awkward as there is no clubhouse. Just a proshop and a small member lounge. Should you want to stay and eat you have to walk to the hotelbar, which is highly recommended. But still it lacks something. They have learned from the reviews from last summer as there were over 60 trollies available, only one in use today. The practice facilities are limited to a large putting green en great chipping area. Both in excellent condition. Today no friendly starter but the remains of a busy Sunday, lots of rubish left behind by tourist golfers. The course had lots of divots all over the fairway not repaired. The course opens up easy along the westside, as soon as you head back towards six things get exciting and the deep potbunkers come into play as do the sanddunes. Holes 7,8 and 9 are a great line up for the last 9. These are the ones that can not ne missed. Some great holes with blind shots, high dunes, lots of elevation and steep ondulated greens makes this course undoubtedly a true links course. Unfortunately the feeling of playing close to the see is not present, just a few moments you are gazing at the wide beaches on the other side of the dunes. Most of the time you walk in a dune or flat dune area.
The quality of the course is in general good. The staff forgot to mention that work was underway at 13 with a temporary green and some teebox work at other holes. The bunkers, especially the man deep pots, were in good condition, nicely prepared. The rough was not as rough as expected and only one ball was lost during this round. The greens were fair but very fast and tough due to the wind. The fairways hard and fast resulting in long drives. The back nine covered some of the best holes and the course really builds up towards the final hole 18.16 and 18 are a dream to end with. Good design work. As a hotelguest the greenfee is affordable but compared to other courses played here this one is overpriced at the regular rate. The setting is nice but not unique.

Portmarnock Links
The Portmarnock Links has been open for play since 1995. It is an exceptional course that offers a just the right degree of challenge, superb views and relaxed atmosphere. Playing golf on the shoreline of a rugged peninsula such as this one, you get a very full flavour of what Ireland is all about. Designed by legendary German golfer Bernhard Langer, no stranger to these parts, he won the Irish Open no fewer than three times at the nearby Portmarnock Golf Club and The Royal Dublin Golf Club, he has come up with a course that has been described by Golf World magazine as “everything a links course should be” with rolling fairway and unforgiving rough. It has been chosen to host numerous amateur and professional events, including the 2008 and 2009 Ladies Irish Open.
