Golf courses in Portugal

Portugal is a fixture on the golf calendar for many European golfers, and rightly so. The country combines an excellent golf offering with a pleasant climate, welcoming people and a cuisine that is more than welcome after eighteen holes. The Algarve is by far the most popular region: more than thirty courses in a relatively small area, with the sea often in the background and the feel of a proper golf destination. But those who think only of the Algarve are missing the full story. Around Lisbon and in the Óbidos region there are courses that can more than hold their own. Practically speaking, Portugal is playable year-round, though spring and autumn are the quietest and most pleasant periods. In summer it can get very warm inland, but there is nearly always a fresh breeze on the coast. Greenfees vary considerably: top courses in the Algarve cost more than elsewhere in the country, but excellent value can still be found there.
